I started an e-commerce store and sold things online.
I made some money but paid heavily for my bad decisions. What were the costly mistakes?
It was my first business. Being a doc, I thought I know it all but seriously, I know nuts.
I made these blunders, but I doubt you should:
Not specific
- I sold many baby products. No niche.
- Given a choice, I would sell panties or condoms alone instead since they are one of the hot-selling items during MCO.
No marketing plan
- I had so many products to sell, I had difficulty marketing all of them.
- As crude as it sounds, I want to be known as the panty-seller guy rather than the guy with a baby store.
Selling large items
- I sold diapers. These diaper packs are huge.
- Despite being light, the volume is large that the delivery charges cost a bomb!
Wasting money
- I spent, spent and spent.
- I didn't keep a tab of the operating expenses.
- I thought I was making money but my warehousing fees, web hosting, delivery charges, etc. were bleeding me dry.
No mentor
- I had no one to guide me.
- I made decisions based on gut instincts. The gut is meant to digest food. Not to guide us in making decisions.
- A mentor was my first priority when I started my web design business.
Don't make the same mistakes I did.
So, what do you want to sell?
