English isn't my first language.
Cantonese is. Then again, I spoke rojak most of the time. I was afraid to talk to English speakers. They made me small and intimidated.
Over the years, I mixed with groups that spoke like me.
I felt safe and comfortable.
However, I was close to crapping in my pants one day. I couldn't get what the ABRSM piano examiner was asking me to do.
Waiting for the "ding" of the bell to get into the exam room was terrifying enough. But, can't understand what the examiner is saying? My fuse almost popped.
These examiners were orang putih. The English they spoke, sounded like me trying to understand what "minions" are saying.
Fast-forward today, my English improved.
Here's how I got better:
That said, I still speak rojak. I believe that's what makes us Malaysians. Unique. And I'm proud to be one.
I use proper English when I need to but not for daily conversations. Still got the 'lah's and 'mah's.
However, I'm sure of one thing. We can only get good at English if we use it regularly.
Any tips you wanna add-on?
