Responding to Negative Comments

Negative comments.

Can be a real pain in the arse.

If we only look it from one side.

I've had my fair of share of negative ones. Negative but constructive remarks are okay. However, hatred is pegged together at times. It makes replying super hard.

What can we do?

1. Walk away

Instead of replying to it immediately, take some time to clear our mind.

If we're feeling upset, the negativity from the comment itself has affected us. We definitely not want to hit reply in that state.

2. Stay neutral

I memang suka-lah when I get positive comments.

Who doesn't, right?

People who agree with us mah, syok. But, gotta remind ourselves not to get used to it. Treat negative comments the same way we treat positive ones.

3. Empathize

The word empathy is vague. It doesn't mean putting ourselves in the person's shoes.

However, it allows us to sense what the other party feels. The fear, anxiety, stress, anger, etc.

By understanding what that person is going through, we can reply compassionately. But, it takes practice.

Do we delete those comments?

Now, that's a tricky question. But in general, I don't. If the comment is directed at me, I'll accept it.

However, I'll remove it if the comment is causing disharmony among others in the community.

What would you do with a negative comment?
